Most often, farmers need expert advice for proper management of pests and diseases affecting their crops in addition to nutrient deficiencies. However, due to remote nature of villages and farms, advice is not easily available when it is most required. Further, it may be difficult for many farmers to locate/contact distantly placed experts for each and every problem and seek their advice for timely management.

In such a situation, recent advances in internet technologies and mobiles can help to a great extent. The smart phones have already found their place in the lives of farmers and hence can be profitably deployed for disseminating the correct information. In recent times, apps and websites based on technologies such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), Visual Recognition and Deep Learning are being developed worldwide for identification of plants, animals and insects. They are also in use for identification of pests, diseases and nutrient deficiencies. These tools have been found very useful and are regularly used by the farmers in different parts of the world.

In this background, the ICAR- Directorate of Cashew Research has developed this website and app (AI based) for identification of pests and diseases of cashew along with nutrient deficiencies. This will enable users to efficiently manage the problems of cashew cultivation, leading to increased production and productivity.

ICAR- Directorate of Cashew Research, Puttur

ICAR-Directorate of Cashew Research is the nodal centre for cashew research in India with its head quarters in Puttur, Dakshina Kannada, Karnataka state (https://cashew.icar.gov.in/). It also coordinates All India Coordinated Research Project on Cashew in 14 centers spread across the country.

The directorate has exhaustive information pertaining to cashew cultivation aspects including pests and diseases across the country accumulated since 1986. It is actively involved in generating new information on cashew through research and disseminating among stakeholders (For more info on cashew cultivation please see Cashew India app https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.cashew.icar)
